Japan is known for being a safe place to live and visit. It still is. However, crime is on the rise, mosly theft. The majority of the victims are elderly and the perpetrators are young adults.
Most of the cases involving elderly are cases where someone poses as a family member over the phone asking for money. With elderly having problems hearing, they easily convince the victims to send money to their bank account believing the person on the other end of the phone is who they say they are. Others pose as bill collectors at the door and get the elderly to pay bogus bills.
Other areas of crime are bicycle and bicycle parts, motorcycle and scooters. The thieves usually go around at night into quiet neighborhoods when most everyone is sleeping. Most of the thieves are youngsters.
So watch your bikes and things you may normally leave outside at night. Lock everything up or bring it inside if you have the space.
Japan isn’t the crime free place it once used to be!
